"Observations as Training Camp Finishes Up"
Sep 02, 2010
One thing that I really noticed in the last scrimmage was the energy level. It seemed like the team had broken out of the training camp duldrums. Both sides of the football played with a lot of energy, they challenged each other, and it seemed like they knew the regular season was right around the corner.
One position group that has really elevated their play since the start of fall practice is the TE group. Richard Gordon, Chase Ford, Asante Cleveland and Billy Sanders have all raised their game.
Yes, I am concerned about the time missed by Joel Figueroa. Miami needs him to be the starting right tackle. He needs the reps. It’s a new position. In fact, the entire offensive line needs to get reps as one unit. Against Ohio State, it will be a blitz-fest, so the o-line better be ready.
Not much is said about Harland Gunn and Brandon Washington. They are big, powerful guys. The Canes have the makings of a good line. It’s just a matter of how quick they gel.
How good can Allen Bailey be? He is as physically gifted a human I have seen on this planet. Now, does that translate into a great senior year. Only time will tell.
Adawale Ojomo has knocked some of the rust off, and is coming around and I have always liked sophmore Olivier Vernon.
I can't pass judgement yet on Kylan Robinson. I need to see him in a game. I have nothing really to base my evaluation on. We will know more about Kylan after FAMU.
The Canes D can use a big year from Ray Ray. If Armstrong can take a nice step in year #2, that would rally help. Ray Ray can provide the physical presence you need and he can make plays too. I hope he continues to get better.
